Excluding paid links

Continuing the paid links discussion, lets try and be positive and see the benefits of excluding paid links.
A big article called 'Discount or Ignore Paid Links' has been written by SoloSEO (and can be seen here). The article argues that the entire purpose of search engines is to give users the most relevant search results available, results not influenced by tactics or games! I half agree with this comment - of course users want the most relevant results, but surely when referring to tactics or games, he means marketing!
Yes you will get the link baiters saying, do something crazy that attracts attention - this will get links pointing towards your site, and I also believe Matt Cutts refers to this type of campaign... But surely using link bait tactics is even more irrelevant than paid links? Sure Google likes link baiting today... but even that is destined to become the next paid link!
